Assembly Instructions (5 Steps)
Follow each step carefully. Work together to clean waste, score precise cuts, align pivots, and test kinetic mechanics.
Measure & Mark the 8 Musical Scale Lengths
Use a ruler and marker to mark 8 straws at graduated lengths: 19.5cm (Do), 17.5cm (Re), 15.5cm (Mi), 14.5cm (Fa), 13.0cm (Sol), 11.5cm (La), 10.0cm (Ti), and 9.5cm (High Do).
Trim Straws with Clean Straight Cuts
Cut each straw cleanly across the marked line with scissors, keeping the open top mouth edges perfectly perpendicular without flattening the tubes.
Plug the Bottom Openings Hermetically
Press a small ball of modeling clay into the bottom end of each straw (or fold the bottom 5mm over and seal tightly with tape). Plugs must be 100% airtight.
Align Tops & Secure with Tape & Popsicle Braces
Line up all 8 straws in order from longest to shortest, making sure the top blowing rims are completely flush in a straight line. Sandwich straws between two popsicle sticks and wrap with tape.
Master the 45-Degree Embouchure & Play Songs
Rest the flute against your lower lip and blow gently across the top edge as if blowing across a bottle top. Practice playing "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and "Twinkle Twinkle".
Acoustic Resonance & Standing Wave Frequencies
Blowing across the open lip creates vortex air vibrations. The length of the closed straw sets the fundamental resonant standing wave: shorter columns vibrate faster, creating higher pitch notes.
Doubling the length of an air column cuts the frequency in half, producing a note one octave lower.
