Assembly Instructions (5 Steps)
Follow each step carefully. Work together to clean waste, score precise cuts, align pivots, and test kinetic mechanics.
Construct the Central Tower Stick
Take one vertical popsicle stick. Sharpen the bottom tip to a dull point or glue a small toothpick tip to serve as the micro-pivot contact point.
Form Drooping Side Outrigger Arms
Glue two popsicle sticks or bend a heavy pipe cleaner across the top of the tower stick so that both arms droop far down below the pivot tip like an inverted V.
Attach Equal Counterweights to Outriggers
Secure heavy metal nuts or equal lumps of clay to the very ends of the drooping side arms using hot glue or tape.
Prepare the Pushpin Pedestal Stand
Stick a pushpin into the cork of an empty glass bottle or wooden block so the metal pinhead points straight up to serve as the support pedestal.
Balance, Spin, and Rock in Equilibrium
Place the central pivot tip atop the pushpin head. Release your hands—the sculpture will balance effortlessly! Give it a gentle tap to watch it rock and spin without falling.
Center of Mass & Stable Equilibrium
When heavy counterweights hang below the pivot point, any slight tilt raises the system’s overall center of mass. Gravity pulls it back down, creating an automatic restoring torque that prevents falling.
An object is in stable equilibrium whenever its center of gravity is positioned lower than its point of support.
