How to Create an Aerobatic Stunt Plane

Acrobatic Paper Jet with Adjustable Twin Elevons for Loop-de-Loops

How to Create an Aerobatic Stunt Plane
Materials Checklist

What You Need Before Starting

1 sheet of A4 printer paper (80 GSM)
Flat folding surface
Small pair of safety scissors for elevon slits
Step-by-Step Tutorial

Folding Instructions (5 Steps)

Follow each step in order. Press your folds firmly against the table using your thumbnail or a ruler for maximum performance.

1

Top Down Envelope Valley Fold

Crease & Unfold

Place your paper vertically. Fold the top edge down about 4 inches to form a horizontal rectangle across the top third of the sheet, crease hard, and unfold to establish your reference line.

Pro Tip: Keep the fold strictly horizontal and square to the outer edges.

2

Fold Corners into Triangle Nose

Valley Fold

Fold both top corners inward down to the center line. Then fold the top triangle point straight downward so it rests like an envelope flap pointing toward the bottom of the page.

Pro Tip: This locked blunt nose moves the plane’s center of gravity forward for acrobatics.

3

Second Corner Inversion & Lock Tab

Tuck & Lock

Fold the new upper angled corners into the center line again. A tiny triangular tab will stick out from underneath; fold this tab UP over the flaps to lock them permanently.

Pro Tip: The center lock tab prevents the jet body from popping open during high-speed loops.

4

Center Fuselage Fold

Symmetry Fold

Fold the entire plane in half outward (Mountain Fold) along the center spine so the locked tab faces outward on the bottom keel.

Pro Tip: Flatten firmly with a ruler to ensure thin, razor-sharp fuselage edges.

5

Fold Broad Delta Wings & Snip Twin Elevons

Cut & Assemble

Fold down wide delta wings parallel to the bottom fuselage. Use safety scissors to make two 1/2-inch slits at the trailing rear edge of each wing to create adjustable elevon flaps. Bend both flaps slightly upward.

Pro Tip: Launch at a 45-degree upward angle with a brisk throw to watch it perform a complete 360-degree vertical loop back to you!

Pitch, Roll, and Yaw Dynamics

Control Surfaces & Angular Momentum (Elevons & Ailerons)

Air passing over deflected rear flaps creates torque that rotates the airplane in 3 axes. Bending both rear tabs upward increases downward tail pressure, forcing the nose UP into a vertical loop. Bending left up and right down causes continuous barrel rolls.

Key Physics Takeaway:

Micro-adjustments of just 1 millimeter to the elevons dramatically transform flight paths from straight darts to acrobatic loops.

Milestone Benefits

Skills Your Child Develops with This Craft

Aerodynamic Variable Testing

Systematically testing one control flap at a time teaches scientific variable isolation and hypotheses testing.

Finger Fine-Motor Calibration

Making sub-millimeter tweaks to rear paper tabs refines micro-motor tactile regulation.

Spatial 3-Axis Trajectory Visualization

Visualizing pitch (up/down), roll (axial spin), and yaw (left/right turn) in three-dimensional space.

Interactive Game Challenges

Fun Family Mini-Games to Play

Challenge #1

The Vertical Loop-the-Loop Contest

Adjust elevon tabs up and throw firmly forward. Measure who can achieve the tightest completed loop without stalling.

Challenge #2

Spiral Corkscrew Flight Challenge

Bend the left elevon UP and right elevon DOWN. Launch horizontally to count how many barrel rolls it executes before landing.

Parent Note:

Explain to children that real supersonic fighter jets and aerobatic display planes use the exact same flap mechanics to pull extreme flight maneuvers.
