How to Create Tabletop Paper Flick Football
Classic Classroom Paper Football & Goalpost Game Rules
What You Need Before Starting
Folding Instructions (5 Steps)
Follow each step in order. Press your folds firmly against the table using your thumbnail or a ruler for maximum performance.
Fold Paper Strip in Half Lengthwise
Take a sheet of paper and fold it in half vertically (hot-dog style). For an extra sturdy, dense football, fold it in half lengthwise once again so you have a narrow 4-layer paper ribbon.
Begin Diagonal Triangle Folds
Take the bottom right corner of the strip and fold it diagonally up to the left edge, creating a right triangle. Then fold that triangle straight upward along its horizontal top edge.
Roll Triangle Continuously Up the Strip
Continue folding the triangle diagonally across and straight up along the entire length of the strip until you reach the last 2 to 3 inches at the top.
Trim or Fold the Remaining Flap
You will have a small leftover rectangular tail at the top. Fold the corners of the tail inward diagonally to form a pointed tab.
Tuck the Tail into the Inner Pocket
Tuck the pointed tab firmly inside the open pocket flap on the face of the triangle. Squeeze all three edges flat. Your paper football is now complete and rock-solid!
Kinetic Momentum, Angular Trajectory & Center of Mass
When sliding the paper triangle across a tabletop, static friction changes to kinetic friction. To score a touchdown, the player applies an impulse force calculated to stop the football with its edge hanging over the table without falling. For field goals, flicking underneath the pointed corner provides lift and forward projectile trajectory.
Tight, dense folds produce a heavier football that flies straighter and slides further with minimal wobble.
Skills Your Child Develops with This Craft
Graduated Force Regulation
Learning to control finger flicking power so the football slides just right without overshooting.
Good Sportsmanship & Rule Following
Taking turns, counting points (6 for touchdown, 1 for extra point, 3 for field goal), and celebrating friendly competition.
Quick Repetitive Folding Routine
The diagonal rolling triangle fold teaches basic origami corner containment in under 2 minutes.
Fun Family Mini-Games to Play
The Edge-Hanger Touchdown (6 Points)
Slide the football from your side of the table. If any part of the triangle overhangs the opponent’s table edge without falling off, it’s a TOUCHDOWN (6 pts)!
Finger Goalpost Field Goal (1 or 3 Points)
The defender holds both thumbs touching together with index fingers pointed straight up to make goalposts. The kicker stands the football on its point with one finger, and flicks with the other hand through the uprights!
Parent Note:
Flick football is the ultimate nostalgic tabletop game. It requires zero screens, zero batteries, and can turn any kitchen table into an exciting parent-child tournament arena.
