Household Scraps & Tools Needed
Assembly Instructions (5 Steps)
Follow each step carefully. Work together to clean waste, score precise cuts, align pivots, and test kinetic mechanics.
Cut the Proscenium Stage Window
Draw a rectangle 2cm from all edges on the front of the cereal box. Carefully cut out the rectangle to create the main viewing frame window.
Install the Translucent Parchment Screen
Cut parchment paper 1cm larger than the window opening. Glue or tape it tautly to the inside of the front frame so the screen is smooth without wrinkles.
Open the Rear Light & Operator Port
Cut out the entire back face of the cereal box and cut narrow horizontal slots along the lower sidewalls so puppeteer sticks can slide in from below or the sides.
Design & Cut Articulated Silhouette Puppets
Draw character silhouettes (dragons, knights, animals, trees) on black cardstock. Cut them out and tape wooden skewers to the backs.
Position the Spotlight & Perform
Place a smartphone flashlight 30cm behind the theater pointing directly at the screen. Dim the room lights, position puppets close to the screen, and perform your play.
Optics: Light Rays & Shadow Scalability
Light travels in straight lines (rectilinear propagation). When an opaque puppet blocks light rays, it casts a sharp silhouette (umbra) on the translucent screen.
Moving the puppet closer to the light source makes its shadow dramatically larger; moving it closer to the screen makes the silhouette sharper and smaller.
