High-Velocity CD Gyroscopic Precision Spinning Top
Angular Momentum, Rotational Inertia & Gyroscopic Stability
Household Scraps & Tools Needed
Assembly Instructions (5 Steps)
Follow each step carefully. Work together to clean waste, score precise cuts, align pivots, and test kinetic mechanics.
Decorate the Top Disc Surface
Glue a spiral, spiral-dot, or rainbow color wheel design onto the printed side of the CD using paper and colored markers.
Glue Marble into Bottom Center Hole
Rest the CD shiny-side up. Place a glass marble in the center hole so half of the sphere protrudes beneath the disc. Glue firmly around the seam with hot glue.
Attach the Bottle-Cap Spin Handle
Flip the CD over. Glue an inverted plastic bottle cap directly on top of the marble joint on the upper decorated face to serve as the finger grip.
Execute the High-Torque Two-Hand Spin
Grip the bottle cap between your thumb and index finger (or rub between both palms) and snap your fingers with a sharp twist onto a smooth flat surface.
Observe Sleep State & Gyroscopic Tilt
Watch the top enter a "sleeping" state where it appears completely motionless while spinning at ultra-high speed. Tap it lightly with a pencil to observe gyroscopic precession.
Conservation of Angular Momentum & Gyroscopic Precession
A spinning mass generates angular momentum along its spin axis. The CD’s outer diameter places mass far from the center, increasing rotational inertia and resisting any tipping force.
The faster the top spins, the more rigidly its angular momentum vector holds it upright against gravity.
Skills Your Child Develops with This Project
Rotational Physics & Inertia
Understanding how peripheral mass distribution prolongs spin duration.
Center-Axis Alignment
Centering the marble pivot precisely in the CD hole to prevent wobble.
Pincer Finger Torque & Dexterity
Snapping thumbs and fingers to deliver maximum initial rotational RPM.
Fun Family Experiments & Mini-Games
The 2-Minute Spin Marathon
Time your top with a stopwatch on different surfaces (tray, table, floor) to see if you can achieve a spin duration exceeding 120 seconds.
Top Battle Arena
Spin two CD gyro tops simultaneously inside a round cake pan or frisbee and see which top knocks the other out first.
Parent Note:
